cyberprincesstwilight-deactivat asked: Something I'm curious about: if the gems are an ancient species who came here long ago, why do they speak English? Or do the humans in SU speak the gem language?
It’s a common rule in scifi that, for the convenience of the audience, everyone, terrestrial or not speaks the same language. But we have seen a few scattered examples of Gem written language, so we know that they have a language of their own. Most series, obviously, explain this with tech, like the famous Star Trek universal translator, which can learn a new language in seconds and translate it in real time. Maybe a Gem’s gemstone does the same thing, but translates it on an intellectual level, so that the Gems actual begin to speak any language that they are in the presence of.
ORRR this is an affirmation that Steven Universe is set in the unimaginably distant future, and humans are the gems’ original creators. No but, seriously they probably just speak English because it’s convenient lol
